Open letter to Union Trade and Commerce Ministry
Dear Editor,
I on behalf of North East Development Society, Itanagar, would like to lay down few lines for kind consideration and sympathetic and necessary action of the secretary, department of trade and commerce and Industry, Govt of India.
That sir, some years ago the Government of India was providing 100% subsidy under
EDF-
Enormous amount of money were spent by the entrepreneurs on transportation alone to either bring machineries and other necessary goods from outside the NE state or export the finished products for marketing which are hundreds of miles away from the manufacture units of NE. Since there is no proper land communication within NE state, transportation of local goods from one state to another becomes virtually impossible.
Some year back the government of India had reduced the industrial subsidy to 70% making it very difficult for the traders of the NE to go for any enterprises. Now adding insult to injury, the central Govt. further reduced subsidy to 30% and as a result the already crippled economy of the NE states further worsened. The industrialists, traders of the North East could neither do anything to enhance their trading skill nor could they make any contribution to the development of their respective state due to various problems being faced by them.
We, therefore, appeal to the Government of India through your good office to reconsider the incentive factor and enhance the subsidy to 100% enabling the NE entrepreneurs to take up industries and big commercial projects to help improve the economy of north east as a whole.

There should be equal opportunity

The National Rural Health Mission Naharlagun had advertised for a few posts under
Arunachal Pradesh State Health Society on contractual basis on Oct 19 and walk in
interview for the same was fixed on 15th Nov. Among the posts mentioned there were
two other posts advertised were -
But in a corrigendum published in a local daily with partial modification of earlier advertisement on Nov 10, it was said that candidates having Master degree in Anthropology and Political Science/History/Economics and MBA will also be eligible to appear in the interview for the post of SCM and DCM.
Now my point is on what basis only few particular subjects were chosen and subjects
like mass communication, public relations, health management, rural development etc.
were not included for the interview and why such partial modification in subjects
were done in such a short notice -

Resentment over poor banking service
Dear Editor,
I would like to dig out the some weakness and poor services rendered by the SBI branches of Itanagar, Naharlagun and other branches at various district headquarters of Arunachal Pradesh for public interest.
Before the year 2006 there was lesser number of SBI customers, but after the Govt initiative to deposit employees salary for safety and security reasons to SBI, the customers of SBI bank branches are growing day by day. Now due to excess customers SBI branches are not able to provide satisfactory services.
However, remedies could be made if the SBI authority wish to provide better services to their customers. I therefore, highly request the authority of SBI to provide us same facilities as the customers of outside Arunachal Pradesh are getting.
It is known to us and SBI authority that so many facilities are there at other state's SBI branches. But here in Arunachal Pradesh we are being deprived of these facilities like separate cash receipt and cash payment counter for senior citizens, separate counter for pensioners, counting machine at each and every cash receipt and cash payment counter, computerized token system instead of making queue, separate counter for passbook up to date with passbook up to date machine at each and every cash payment, separate counter for any enquiry, separate counter for treasury challan, provision for waiting lounge etc. It is seen that in the first week of every month, huge crowd of old men and women are standing in the queue for long time and some time they return home with empty hand because of expiry of given transaction time. SBI can't provide better services unless the authorities improve and modify their system.
Therefore, I would like to request the SBI authorities to kindly provide above mentioned facilities at the earliest to mitigate the sufferings of its customers.

Promote village tourism
Dear Editor,
This is apropos the news item on celebration of Siang River Festival 2011 at Aalo. I would like to suggest that in addition to all these festivals new area should be explored by the tourism department to augment inflow of tourists such as "village tourism" which is very successful in South India instead of going for projects which are mostly not sustainable in long run. This will help local villagers to earn much needed money and generate handsome revenue for the cashless state. Also one wonders why there is no popular campaign on 'Bed and Breakfast Scheme' which is in existence for quite some time.

Tuki, Sanjoy appeal for peace and brotherhood

Terming the incident as very unfortunate and great loss for the society, Tuki said it was not a communal incident and appealed every one in the district and outside not to flare up the issue by giving it a communal colour. We have been living here together for centuries as brothers and friends peacefully and will live together as ever. Government will not tolerate any person trying to provoke the situation by politicizing it or giving it a communal colour, he warned.
The state government was shocked on learning the incident and is very much concerned about the situation and doing its best to defuse tension in the valley. A one man commission of senior IAS officer has been constituted to enquire into the incident, he informed. The enquiry may take time, but law should be given free hand to punish the culprits. No one should support or shelter the culprits as criminals do not belong to any community, he added. Sanjoy said, the November 3, incident and that preceded it were both unscrupulous and condemnable. The former was an stray incident nothing to do with any community and everybody condemns it and the later was an attack on the administration. There is no communal place in both the incidents, he said and added Communalism is a very dangerous term, it brings nothing but destruction, all should refrain from the very word communal.
Terming the Apatanis as one of the few advanced communities of the state, Sanjoy suggested them to play the elder brother role in the state and create conducive atmosphere for development. Govt. will do its best to calm down the issue, and we brothers will continue to shake hands and live together peacefully as ever, he stated.

ITANAGAR, Nov 17: Mechuka, one of the major tourist destinations in Arunachal Pradesh, is yet to be explored in real sense. Beside Tawang and Ziro, Mechuka has always fascinated every traveler including this journalist.
I was overwhelmed with excitement when I finally got the opportunity to be part of North East Riders Meet (NERM) and to visit enchanting Mechuka (Menchuka) town. Being part of the entourage of riders by the time we arrived at Aalo after traveling through Ziro, Daporijo, I was dead tired. I was having divided mind whether to continue journey upto Mechuka or return back! But the temptation of visiting Mechuka was too much to resist. On 13th November morning, finally along with three friends started journey towards Mechuka. Journey from Aalo to Mechuka passing through treacherous roads was both intriguing and terrifying. Along the journey some breathtaking sights including a waterfall near Hirgo village mesmerizes the visitors.

In terms of infrastructure development, still lot has to be done before Mechuka becomes major tourist destinations in true sense. The road condition from Tato to Mechuka is in poor shape. BRTF needs to put in more effort to make this stretch of road safer for travelers. However, road condition within Mechuka town is quite impressive and much better than capital complex road. Wish our town planner in Itanagar can learn something from this remote town.
Apart from pitiable road condition, poor electricity supply is the cause of worry for masses. A local resident told, “For last 3 months there is no power supply in Mechuka town. The hydel from which our town draws electricity had broken down and authorities are yet to fix the problem.” He further added, “There is only one chopper service from Itanagar to Mechuka via Aalo which is also very erratic. Chopper service need to be doubled for benefit of locals and tourists too.”
If state government really wants to tap the tourism potentiality of this stunning place, then they need to solve basic infrastructure problem at the earliest.
Meanwhile, while expressing deep shock over the death of three policemen near Tato in a bus accident All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) President Takam Tatung has demanded state government to immediately provide adequate compensation to family members of dead policemen and also to those injured. “The family of dead policemen should be provided compensation at the earliest and state government should offer government job to the wife or any nearest relatives. Also the state government should bear the medical expenses of injured policemen,” stated Tatung. The AAPSU leader also urged the government to shift the injured personnel who are recuperating at Dibrugarh to evacuate them to better hospitals at Delhi or Guwahati.
We are grateful to them as they performed their task of making sure that bike riders from across country enjoyed hospitality without any trouble at Mechuka,” stated Takam Tatung.
The AAPSU leader has termed the death of policemen as loss to the state of Arunachal. Tatung also expressed sympathy with family member of deceased policemen “At this moment of sorrow, whole state is behind the family member of dead policemen,” he said.
Further he asked state government to recognize contribution of those people who carried out rescue operation at accident site on 15th November. “Local villagers, bikers and even journalists who were present at accident site and carried out rescue work should be recognized. Without their alertness things could have gone worse,” said AAPSU President.
He also asked human right organizations to take up cause of dead policemen. “When police commits even a minor mistake these human right groups make hue and cry. Till now state government has not announced any compensation for policemen who lost life on duty. Where these right groups have gone hiding?” questioned Takam Tatung.

MP called for united efforts for development
TEZU, Nov 17: MP Ninong Ering has called upon the public leaders to work together for development.
While addressing a public gathering at Danglat village under Tezu circle today he said all leaders have the same motto to work for the welfare of the people. He urged the leaders irrespective of their political affinity to desist from blame game and work together.
The MP however, assured the public to impress upon the authorities to take up flood protection scheme to mitigate the suffering of the villagers who have been facing flood fury every year. He also approved a sum of Rs 5 lakhs each for Danglat and New Danglat from the MPLAD fund and requested the local MLA, district administration and the local leaders to take up the projects on priority basis.
Earlier yesterday, the MP attended the valedictory function of Indira Gandhi Govt. college Tezu along with the Local MLA cum parliamentary secretary transport Karikho Kri. He announced `10 lakh from MPLAD fund for construction of security wall of the college and also assured a library building for the college very soon.

Regarding motor vehicle spar parts, the memorandum said, "the Government of Assam is charging VAT @ 5% whereas in Arunachal Pradesh it is 12.5%". It is pertinent to mention here that not only private parties but also Government agencies are purchasing motor vehicle spare parts from Assam with a variation of 7.5% which has resulted in huge revenue loss to the Government, it said.
It apprised the Chief Minister that revenue generation from this motor vehicle sector could rise if a little effort was put to bring down the present 12.5% VAT charges to 4% like that of Assam where the state Government has fixed VAT against all spare parts of vehicles @ 5%.
The yearly revenue contribution of motor vehicle sector of Arunachal Pradesh to the State exchequer is 20.50 crore (Approx), it informed adding that it could generate not less that 80 to 90 crore annually if the Government adopt a protectionist policy.
It also urged the Chief Minister to issue an order to all the chiefs engineering department to purchase tools and plants for execution of various works from local dealers only which would earn revenue to the state Government as well as benefit the local dealers.
IGNOU B.Ed. workshop concludes
ITANAGAR, Nov 17: The 2nd 12 days practical based workshop for B.Ed. students concluded today. The Special Secretary of Finance, Swathi Sharma attended the valedictory function as the Chief Guest.
In her address she called the trainees be the students first rather than teachers, then only they can understand the students innocence, ignorance and short comings with empathy. She asked them to be friendly towards the children.
Further she asked them to encourage the students to ask many questions, think of their children those who are thought by somebody else, somewhere let that inner feeling guide them in their teaching profession. The Chief Guest advised them to be open to understand and ready to adopt new changes.
IGNOU, Itanagar, Regional Director Dr. S. J. Neethirajan in his address called for change in their teaching pattern and performance while they go to their respective places and be an instrument for the social change and reconstruction. He further urged them to instill moral values and sense of social responsibilities and courage in the hearts of students.
Since teachers are guiding the children’s and today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens, he asked them to lead them in the right path, so that they may not become a burdensome society in the future.

Let’s save the lives of people from malaria

Recent news on malaria is not about how to help save people from this highly preventable disease but it’s all about ‘The Lancet’ article, published online 21st October 2010, telling that the World Health Organization’s (WHO) estimate of malaria deaths in India are very less which was subsequently rejected by the WHO official mainly by challenging the study methodology.
Common people are less interested about the academic discussion whether WHO’s methodology
was correct or the use of verbal autopsy by the Million Death Study (MDS) Collaborators
was appropriate. Almost everyone in malaria endemic areas of India knows that many
die in malaria which are usually not reported as malaria-
However, after going through The Lancet article one can find that this cause of death
study is quite correct from the epidemiological & statistical point of view. It’s
indeed interesting to see that the study had a very large sample size, more than
122000 deaths, and 99% confidence interval. WHO reportedly questioning the use of
verbal autopsy in this study does not serve any purpose as under-

So, what is the role of RGI in this study or was it a good tactics? Since WHO has reportedly criticized the study, so, RGI now prefers to remain silent.

Workshop on unwritten and endangered languages concludes with a high note
ITANAGAR, Nov 17: The three days workshop cum symposium on status of unwritten and endangered languages of Arunachal Pradesh came to an end today with a high note. The dignitaries present in the valedictory function highly appreciated the workshop saying ‘it is the beginning of the new chapter.’
Prof. A. C Bhagabati, former Vice chancellor of the university expressed his satisfaction over the successful conclusion of the wokshop. He considered it as a step taken towards saving the endangered languages of Arunachal Pradesh.

Speaking on the event Moji Riba, Managing Director of CCRD, remarked the occasion as a historic event and stressed on various strategies for consolidation of the endangered languages.
The participants from various tribes and communities like Bugun, Meyor, Tangam, Miji, Koro and Puroik talked about various problems in the workshop and suggested certain methods. They advocated for proper documentation of the various tribes and its dialects and introduction of books on their mother tongue. They also spoke on holding district level workshop so that it can be accessible to the elderly villagers to take the benefit of their knowledge and human resources on languages.
They further pleaded for customary laws to help the people to preserve and speak on their own native language. Outcome of such workshop should not remain in papers. Efforts should be made to transform the outcome into reality, they said.
Prof. Tamuli also stressed on formation of ‘Mother Tongue Speaking Community’ with mass participation of community members with the support of the higher institute like university.
Prof. T. Mibang, RGU VC in charge said that every individual of the community should shoulder the responsibility in preservation of mother tongues and to make the language alive. They should encourage their people to speak and promote their mother tongue, he said. He further said that development of script system is not the proper solution in preservation of endangered languages, rather he called for popular script which is easily adaptable to the general mass.
Speaking on the sideline of the workshop, Bogun community representative, Sange Norbu Phiang said participating in such workshop in RGU and meeting the members from different tribes is a new experience. He learned how to preserve our language and will try to disseminate knowledge gained from such important workshop.
The workshop helped me to interact with community members from different people, said Dopo Degio of the Koro community. He further said ‘we should not neglect our own language’ and assured to impart knowledge about the need of preservation of the language among the people.
Bokin Daji, of the Tangam community said, the workshop gave him lots of knowledge. He believes that future is in their hands and future generation should strive hard to preserve our language.
Adang Yachu, of Porohit community said he learned many important things from the workshop. He was very much impressed with the hospitality rendered by the organizers of the workshop.
Grop Dorjee Mayor of Mayor community expressed that the workshop empower them to preserve their language and culture. He suggested documentation of all endangered languages for future generation. He added the process should be open to all educated as well as illiterate masses of the community.
The workshop give me new idea of preserving the local language, said Taluk Miji of the Miji community. He suggested that the local practices should be brought up in a book format for wider circulation which will help in preservation of the language.

Meanwhile, in a panchayat coordination meeting held at Kuporijo, the panchayat leaders of Gusar anchal block appreciated Marde for taking up various developmental activities under Gusar circle.
Further, addressing the gathering, Anchal Samity chairperson Jumli Dugi called for proper coordination among the panchayat leaders for over all development of the area. He also appealed the PRIs members to follow the guidelines under Panchayati Raj.
Sports Meet concludes
ITANAGAR, Nov 17: The first ever Annual Sports Meet of Govt. Middle English School, Niti Vihar was conducted from November 12 to 15 last.
The students were divided into hour houses, namely Red, Yellow, Blue and Green Houses and Red House became champion house of the sports meet while Yellow House was adjudged the disciplined house.
The valedictory function was attended by Papum Pare DDSE TT Tara as chief guest, who encouraged the students to take part in games and sport activities which is also a part of their education. He said that all these games and sports inculcate in students a healthy competitive spirit, leadership qualities, brotherhood sportsmanship as well as discipline.
All the students of the school took part in various compeittions with great enthusiasm encouraged by their parents.
Earlier the Sports Meet was inaugurated by Headmaster of the school Dr. Jumnee Rina.
Farewell to bike riders
ITANAGAR, Nov 17: Motor Vehicle Dealers Association of Arunachal hosted farewell function for bike riders at Bucho Motors Pvt. Ltd on Tuesday night on last day of North East Riders Meet. Fashion show was organized with dresses made from waster products like plastic, waster papers etc which was designed by Yaana Ngoba.

The Chief Guest contributed 30 pcs of CGI sheets, School jersey and PA set (Amplifier) and few amount to the school authority for the smooth functioning of the school. Annual Eucharistic Procession on Nov 21
ITANAGAR Nov 17: Diocese of Itanagar is organising its Annual Eucharistic Procession on November 21.
The procession lead by the Bishop of Itanagar will start from Good Shepherd School premises and culminated near Model village, Naharlagun.

ITANAGAR, Nov 17: Deputy Commissioner Amzad Tak and DDSE Nyage Potom have consented to attend as chief guest and guest of honour in the Boje Ao Foundation Day celebration at Boje Lite Village, West Siang District on November 27.

AARCA decry ‘favouritism’
ITANAGAR, Nov 17: Continuing its tirade against alleged irregularities in departments in awarding contract works, All Arunachal Registered Contractors Association (AARCA) in its meeting held today appealed to all the heads of the department not to involve in alleged favoritism, malpractices in awarding contract works.
The association said it will not tolerate any kind of malpractices and threatened to take legal path if such practices continue.
Condolence
ITANAGAR, Nov 17: Taba Lomdak of Ango Lomdak village, Puchigeko circle, Upper Subansiri District passed away recently at Ango Lomdak village after prolongs illness.
Lomdak was appointed as Gaon Bura in 1965 and served as Anchal Samity Member from
1974-
Later, he served as HGB of Pate Bango from 1988 till his death.
Meanwhile, Nyishi Welfare Association, Upper Subansiri District condoled the death of Lomdak and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
